Lenten Hospitality Groups are back for our 2018 season!
We hope you will take this opportunity to join a small group, meeting weekly at the home of a member host. Hosts are offering their homes (or an otherwise specified location) on various days at various times, ranging from Tuesday mornings at 10am to Thursday evenings at 6pm. Some groups will share dinner, some will have childcare, and some will simply enjoy each other’s company. Join the group that best fits your style and your schedule. Sign up online, in the Fellowship Hall, or email Louisa with your choice from below:
- Monday Night, 6:00pm – Gary and Missy Davis’s (Kid friendly!)
- Tuesday Afternoon, 1:30pm – Susan Foote at the Atria
- Tuesday Night, 6:30pm – Linda Crutchfield’s
- Thursday Evening, 5:30pm – Will and Louisa Umphres’ (Kid friendly!)
- Thursday Night, 6:30pm – The Golden Klumpe’s
This Lent, our groups will all join in a five-part study by William H. Willimon, Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love. As our Adult Education leaders explored themes and topics that felt vital to our church in this moment, they were drawn to the challenge of reaching across boundaries and loving despite difference. Willimon’s book is inspired by 1 John 4:18-21:
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love. We love because God first loved us. If anyone says, I love God, and hates a brother or sister, her is a liar, because the person who doesn’t love a brother or sister who can be seen can’t love God, who can’t be seen. This commandment we have from him: Those who claim to love God ought to love their brother and sister also.” (CEB)
But the book comes with a warning. As homiletics professor O. Wesley Allen Jr. says, “Do not read unless you are ready to be changed and want to change the world!”. Along with our Hospitality Group readings, we will offer a Sunday morning conversation time pairing this book with its accompanying video series.
Groups will begin meeting the week of February 18th and books will be on sale in the Fellowship Hall ($10 each) in the early weeks of February.
Sunday Mornings (9:45-10:45am), February 18-March 25
Led by the Adult Education Committee
We’ll gather weekly as we read through Willimon’s latest Bible Study. The book is accompanied by a DVD series which we’ll watch together Sunday mornings and discuss. This Sunday morning option is perfect for anyone hosting one of our hospitality groups to help preview the book chapter and get thoughts flowing, for anyone interested in reading the book but not attending a hospitality group, OR for anyone interested in the augmented experience of reading the book along with the DVD.
